Assignment 03 - DUE Friday, February 29th
Reading Assignment:
The Syllabus!!! - The grading part is especially important.
UG Astro's IDL Tutorial - There's good stuff in there which I skimmed over in class. If you're confused at this point, you should definately go through it.
The Purple Book - Read Chapter 1 through Section 1.1.5.
Introduction
Number two is a continuation of the myfillarr.pro assignment. If you wrote that one properly, this one should go smoothly. If not, get help on fixing myfillarr.pro so that it does what it's supposed to!!!
This assignment also deals with a decent ammount of math, so if you don't know what a gaussian equation is, look it up on mathworld or wikipedia (or as they used to do when I was a young lad- look in a math book!).
Number three is a very intresting problem having to do with the Monte Carlo Method of simulating or modelling things. You should read this material on how to do the problem, before you begin: Click Here!
Keep in mind the examples shown in class:
hangman.pro
The Assignment:
Do numbers 2 and 3 on the page linked below.
For number 2, you treat the "width" of the gaussian as being the "sigma" radius, the "1/e" radius or the width at half max. It's up to you.
For number 3, the BENCHMARK.PRO stuff isn't mandatory, unless you're interested.

HINTS:
For #2: Look at the journal file: 2-13-08.txt
For #3: Read the back ground material and make sure all the numbers you put into the program are the DOUBLE data type.
